Hurricane Katrina turned New Orleans upside down, displacing over 1 million residents from the central Gulf Coast and causing well over $100 billion dollars in damage. In the wake of the annual media exposure brought to New Orleans in connection with Mardi Gras, it's like a splash of cold water to be reminded of the events of August 2005, when a whole lot of water breached the federally built levee system designed to protect the city, leading to widespread flooding, death and destruction.
